On Wednesday, May 22, 2026, A new world record was set by thrill seekers from around the world. After hundreds of years of man conquering mountains, we have finally done it again. Only this time it is even bigger. In 24 hours, 274 people reached the summit of Mount Everest, making them all part of a ginormous world record.
This record surpassed the previous 2019 record by over 50 people, a huge jump that was never expected by anyone. All of the climbers came from the Nepal side, because China has currently closed its gates. While the climbers are celebrating the achievement, it raises awareness about just how many people should be allowed on the mountain at a time.
Mount Everest is the biggest mountain in the world, which is why it attracts so much attention. The Returner states,” The 8,849-metre (29,032 feet) Everest straddles the border between Nepal and the Tibet region of China and can be climbed from both sides.” This is almost 5 1⁄2 miles tall stretching almost 14 airport runways tall. This is huge, attracting thrill seekers and master climbers from all over the world.
Also claiming a record this week is Kami Rita Sherpa, a hiker who has reached the summit a total of 32 times. PBS reports, “ Kami Rita Sherpa, A renowned Mount Everest guide who this week scaled the peak a record 32nd time, urged authorities on Friday to limit climbers on the summit.” She has realized that in order to keep the natural beauty of the mountain preserved, the number of visitors on it must go down.
494 people have been given a permit to climb, on top of the roughly 1000 people working there, and the hundreds of guides helping those people climb. These people are leaving trash and other waste behind, and those who unfortunately don’t make it are left on the mountain with all their belongings. This leads to the pristine beauty of the mountain being destroyed, and many are worried there will be nothing left for future generations to experience.
Laws have been made to help protect the beauty of the mountain, such as large fines for coming down with less than you came up with. However, every year many people still leave their waste behind. While imposing larger fines may solve the problem, some people still think that may not be enough. Many wish for Nepal to close its gates as well, and let the mountain stay untouched for a year or two. They believe this will help restore the beauty of the mountain without need for human intervention.
However, people are hopeful the correct decision will be made, and Mount Everest will still be beautiful, hundreds of years from now. Even though this record is very new, many people believe it will be broken very shortly, due to the rising number of climbers on the mountain. At least whatever happens Mount Everest will still be the most famous, and biggest, mountain in the world.
