Everyone has that one movie that just hits close to home or reminds you of your childhood. For many people, that is Disney’s Moana. The movie came out in November of 2016, and it was a big hit. This movie was an exciting adventure with lots of music and suspense, which included a great lesson and a sentimental ending. Moana is a great movie for all ages and has many deeper connections.
The main character, Moana, is a Polynesian princess. Moana, even as a young child, was always interested in the ocean.” Go beyond the reef,” this was her dream, but her dad was keeping her from doing that because of his own past. Her dad wanted her to become the future chief of the island they had been living on for centuries, Motunui. Another important character in this movie is her grandmother, Gramma Tala. She introduces her to some ancient stories and is almost seen as a mentor to Moana. Moana is a great movie to show children because it teaches important lessons. One of the main lessons is that you shouldn’t let others hold you back and should embrace and try to discover your own identity, not what others expect of you. Her father is constantly telling her that she can’t go in the water and that” Happiness is where you are, but she doesn’t agree with that. Even after this, Moana continues trying to do what she has always wanted. At one point, she even struggles and almost gets very hurt, but that doesn’t stop her; she tries again. Moana has a goal; she wants to find out why her island is dying, which is why she has the need to explore the ocean. Another important character is Maui, who also has a goal. Maui is a demigod of the wind and the sea; he tells us stories of how he used to help his people and tells us why he needs his hood so desperately. He needs to get somewhere to retrieve his magical shape shifting hook. They end up teaming up so they can complete their missions. They go through many challenges, which really teach you that even when you are going through a hard time, you should still go on and not give up.
The movie Moana has so many extraordinary things about it. My favorite part of it would be the music and the emotional concept. The song “You’re Welcome” by Dwayne Johnson has 538 million listens. The music was written by Lin- Manuel Miranda, and is widely known. Another thing is the emotional topics in it. There are lots of scenes that cover sensitive topics like death and stressful situations. This exposes children to these topics, which they need to know later on in life.
One thing that was a weak element was that it was an inaccurate representation of the Polynesian culture. Many people were upset with the fact that they didn’t make it more realistic, and it is inaccurate. They blended many cultures. They felt as if they rushed the cultural part of it. They also created a fake representation of the character Maui. They showed him with tattoos, which disrespected the sacred culture.
When different people watch this movie, they may have different reactions, but personally, I loved it. I thought it was a great blend of lessons and an interesting plot. The whole time I watched it, I was engaged in it and kept wanting to keep watching. I feel this movie made me feel inspired and made me feel more confident. I felt a deep connection to the movie, and I thought it was amazing how, even though people in her life kept telling her to do something, she didn’t let their own opinions affect her.
Everyone should watch the movie Moana at least once in their lives. It has a great lesson for all ages. This movie has so many great parts, but also has some bad aspects. They have such great emotional concepts that teach children great things to take away, even after watching the movie. Some bad parts are the distorted ideas of the Polynesian culture. I feel that people and families should spend their time watching this movie because it gives an insight into how different parts of the world are and how different people live their lives. If I had to rate this movie, I would rate it 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. This is because I thought it was a great movie, but the inaccurate representation took off half a point. So in conclusion, you should watch the movie Moana by Disney with your family.
