Pizza is widely considered the world’s favorite food. 3 billion pizzas are sold each year in the U.S., that is 46 pizza slices per person, making it a widely known product in the United States (History Today). Pizza really took a turn when “King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889.” While Legend says that they were getting bored with their diet and asked for an assortment of pizzas that she enjoyed (history.com). After the king and queen visited a pizza spread by immigrants going to the United States from Napels making their own pizzas in New York, Boston, St Louis, and more cities.
How was it invented?. Pizza was founded in 600 B.C. by the waterfront city of Naples, originally as a Greek settlement. But did not get as popular till the 18th century in Naples, when the Naples population blew up from 200,000 people to 399,000 people as the urban economy struggled to keep its pace(History Today). There were more vendors on the streets carrying pizza, and while the pizzas were not complicated, they were just served with garlic salt and lard, but it was their unpopularity and low price that made people want them (History Today).
So why was pizza so important? The Neapolitans wanted not very expensive food that they could eat quickly and eat every meal.“There’s no better feeling in the world than a warm pizza box on your lap.” – Kevin James. Pizza started off with flatbreads with many different toppings that could be eaten at any meal and anywhere, such as on the streets from vendors or restaurants. Also, pizza was a bigger thing for breakfast in 1843 when Alexandre Dumas noted in Le Corricolo, a two liard slice would make a good breakfast, and 2 sous would buy a pizza large enough for a whole family(history today).
Pizza became a widely popular thing while soon being eaten by the Romans, Greeks, and even the ancient Egyptians (History.com). It was an awesome invention because it helped so many families who struggled with money and gave them an easy thing to make for a low price that could be c
onsumed anytime. It is a widely known product that will go on and get better for generations.
