The amount of trash on the campus is a great issue. Many students don’t care about littering, many feel like just a piece of paper or one plastic bag isn’t going to
do anything but it adds up quickly. Think about how much trash there would be if every student in the world didn’t care about the trash on our ground. There are roughly 75 million students in the US alone. It would cover 637 American Football fields.
In this photo it shows the amount of trash bags after cleaning up only about ⅓ of the campus. Imagine if we didn’t have the janitors to help clean up our campus. It would not be a great place to learn “We clean up so much trash everyday and this is not even half of it,” the custodian feels that there is so much trash everywhere on the campus. We need to think before we leave our trash for other people to clean up. The students that don’t often clean up are the ones that think it is funny to leave your trash around. They need to understand that it is not cool to leave your stuff everywhere. The reason this keeps happening is because students will eat their snack and then just put their trash somewhere and leave. They don’t feel the need to clean up after themselves.
It shows how much just one day of trash really is. If you think about it in the long run a lot of trash will build up in a week or even a month. The most common times that this issue occurs is during our breaks times like brunch and lunch. Even though there are many garbage cans located all around campus, students still think it is easier to just leave their trash around. We need to think about what would happen if we didn’t have the custodians to clean up the trash we leave all over campus. Soon there would not be any room for us to walk without stepping in some yogurt or having a wrapper blow in our face.
Some solutions could be that you and your friends can work together and make sure that your friend group cleans up after each other. We all need to work together to try and make our school cleaner. If we can try and make sure that our trash is not going on the floor and always ends up in a trash can it will make our school so much cleaner.
Next time you think about throwing your trash on the ground, think about the people who have to clean it up after or how trash-filled our school would end up. Whenever someone who is leaving their trash for other people to clean up you should go ask them to clean up after themselves. We should all work together to reduce litter.
