With her bat-like ears and a tail that never stopped wagging, Penny wasn’t just a French Bulldog; she was the heartbeat of my world. She had a strange habit of “singing” whenever I walked through the front door, a series of odd sounding howls that made every single bad day disappear. We were an inseparable team, and when we moved into our new house in 2020, I truly believed we were starting the best chapter of our lives together. This transition was going to be a fresh start for both of us, but God had other plans.
The first few weeks were a sun-drenched blur of excitement as we settled into our quiet new home. Penny claimed my new bed set as hers, and we spent our afternoons exploring every inch of this new house. I remember my mom saying, “Penny acts like she owns this house” as she watched Penny zoom across the new couches with pure joy. It felt like the fresh start I had always dreamed of, and seeing her so happy made the stress of school completely vanish.
However, the dream shattered on a beautiful afternoon just a year after we moved in. I had left to head to school one day. When I got back she did not come to greet me as usual, so when I went out to look I found her dead in the pool. Curious as ever, Penny was probably trying to investigate the sparkling water. Sadly, at that time we did not figure we needed a gate to the pool. Finding her was the most devastating moment of my life, a sudden tragedy that transformed our new sanctuary into a place of profound, echoing grief.
This loss taught me a heartbreaking lesson about the hidden dangers that come with a new environment. “Why did God let Penny drown?” I asked my mom. This was the one and only time I doubted God. Drowning is a silent, lightning-fast threat, and even a fenced yard can harbor risks we do not see until it is far too late. Now, I keep a custom pillow with her face on it on my bed, a soft reminder of the loyal friend who should still be here greeting me after school.
I am sharing Penny’s story because I want to ensure no other pet owner feels this specific, preventable pain. Taking an extra hour to double-check pool gates and covers is a necessity, not an option. While Penny’s physical presence is gone, her spirit remains a driving force for me to advocate for pet safety in every home. I will always carry her memory with me, forever honoring the best friend who taught me that love is worth every second, even when it ends far too soon
