Nestled deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Hume Lake Christian Camps has become one of the most well-known Christian retreat centers in the western United States. Surrounded by giant pine trees, mountain air, and the peaceful waters of Hume Lake, the camp has served as a spiritual getaway for Christians since 1946. Today, it continues to attract thousands of campers, church groups, and families every year who come seeking a stronger connection with God and with one another.
Hume Lake was originally created during California’s logging era, but over time, the area transformed into a center for Christian camps and retreats. According to Hume Christian Camps, the organization was founded shortly after World War II, when a group of Christian leaders sought to create a place where people could grow spiritually, away from everyday distractions. The first camp opened in the summer of 1946 and hosted hundreds of campers. Since then, more than one million people have attended programs at Hume Lake and its related camps across the country.
For many Christians, Hume Lake is important because it provides an environment focused on faith, worship, and community. The camp offers Bible studies, worship services, youth programs, leadership training, and outdoor activities designed to help campers strengthen their relationship with Jesus Christ. Hume’s mission statement explains that the organization wants visitors to “meet Jesus,” grow in their faith, and develop habits such as prayer, Bible study, and Christian fellowship.
Many churches throughout California send youth groups to Hume Lake every summer and winter. Students often spend a week participating in chapel services, worship music, team competitions, hiking, and group discussions about faith. Christian leaders believe these experiences help young people build friendships and deepen their beliefs in a setting away from phones, school stress, and social pressures. A former camp counselor said that, “The compensation is less than fair, but the memories and friendships last longer than any paycheck. Working here is one of the best things you can do as a young adult—you get to witness God move and work in kids’ lives every season.” The camp’s location in nature also plays a major role in its appeal, as many visitors say the quiet mountain environment helps them reflect spiritually.
Hume Lake remains an influential place within Christian communities. Its long history, scenic setting, and focus on faith have made it an important destination for generations of believers. For many Christians, Hume Lake is more than just a summer camp; it is a place where people gather to worship, reflect, and strengthen their spiritual lives in the beauty of the mountains.
