Harrison Carbaugh -Welcome to the Near Future podcast, where we talk about current events
happening and changing the world. We are your co-host, Harrison.
Mason Worden -And Mason. And today we will be discussing the pros and cons of AI. In the
next three minutes we will explore three reasons AI can be good and bad.
Harrison Carbaugh -First, AI can be a beneficial part of today’s society because it can help
automate processes and make things more efficient.
Mason Worden -Harrison, I know you have Grammarly on your computer. Can you tell me
what it helps with?
Harrison Carbaugh -Well, it checks my spelling and grammar to make my writing sound better.
Mason Worden -And it is all AI consistently checking our writing for ways to improve it.
Harrison Carbaugh -Yes it is. Also, I use ChatGPT to help me with work that I can’t really
understand.
Mason Worden -According to Gallup, forty percent of workers admit to using AI to make their
works better.
Harrison Carbaugh -While that is all good, AI still has some bad parts that can make it
dangerous.
Mason Worden -Sometimes AI can be used in ways that harm people.
Harrison Carbaugh -With many AI tools out there, people can use AI to change what others do
or say and post online.
Mason Worden -Also, hackers can use AI to steal a person’s data online and access their
private account.
Harrison Carbaugh -According to IMDb, only twenty four percent of gen AI alternatives are
secured.
Mason Worden -This means if you share something personal with AI, someone should be able
to find it and use it later.
Harrison Carbaugh -Exactly. And many criminals are using this to access bank accounts and
steal money.
Mason Worden -Well, this is bad. AI is also contributing to climate change around the world.
Harrison Carbaugh -AI can be a very helpful part of human lives, but many people fail to
realize how AI is affecting our environment.
Mason Worden -In a study by MIT news, the electricity consumption of data centers rose to
four hundred and sixty terawatts an hours in twenty twenty two, which by itself is an
unfathomable number.
Harrison Carbaugh -What’s even worse is that was four years ago. That number has
completely skyrocketed since the big AI boom in twenty twenty five.
Mason Worden -So basically, AI is one of the leading causes of global emissions rising.
Harrison Carbaugh -Exactly.
Mason Worden -So what have we learned today?
Mason Worden -AI has many benefits, like automating tasks and getting things done faster.
Harrison Carbaugh -But we’ve also realized AI can have its cons, like its effect on our
environment, because of its massive power consumption.
Mason Worden -Yep. Exactly. So I guess everything has its pros and cons.
Harrison Carbaugh -Well, if you’ve enjoyed this episode, make sure to like follow and share so
you never miss out on another episode.
