Should Animal Testing be Banned?

Animal testing has been a controversial problem over the years. On one hand, animal testing has helped scientists develop medicines and antibiotics, but on the other hand it raises animal welfare concerns. Animal testing is to use animals in different experiments to ensure safety in products like cosmetics and medicines to determine if a product is toxic or safe to use. Do you think animal testing should be banned?

During Covid in 2020, animal testing was necessary to help create a vaccine. If we didn’t have animal testing, then Covid would probably still be here today. Nikolai Petrovsky, a college professor, thinks that animal testing is “absolutely necessary” and skipping that step would be “fraught with difficulty and danger.” Scientific research on animals helps develop most of our products like medicines and antibiotics. Without it, we wouldn’t have all of the medicines and vaccines we have today and doctors would have to find a different alternative.

Many animals experience pain or death due to animal testing and it is considered as inhumane and cruel. Most of the time scientists also have to test more than 1 animal to get the results that they want. Every year more than 110 million animals die due to animal testing. Animal experimentation is not only a waste, but it is expensive. The Human Society International explains that big companies spend about 3 million dollars on animals and the government spends about 15 billion dollars on animal testing every year. Not only is it expensive, but it can take years to get a result that people are satisfied with.

What is the solution to animal testing? Scientists can use things like testing on human cells and tissue or human volunteering testing. People can donate tissue, blood cells or even deceased donors for scientists to use which will reduce the amount of an

imal subjects needed. As a result, using non animal organisms can save time, money, and the lives of millions of animals.
