Bobi, the oldest dog ever, died at the age of 31. Bobi broke the Guinness world record for being the oldest dog in February 2023 and passed away months later in his home, a farm in Portugal on Saturday. Bobi was a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo and was born on May 11, 1992, and lived with his owner ever since they were 8. Bobi died in a veterinarian’s hospital and his death was announced multiple times on social media by a veterinarian who had been taking care of him for years.

The previous record holder for oldest dog, Bluey, was an Australian cattle dog that also lived on a farm, and was born in 1910 living up to 29 years old.Sadly, due to Bobi’s passing, there is a new record holder for the world’s oldest living dog, Spike, who is a 23 year old chihuahua from Ohio.

Bobi grew up with Costa’s family, along with 4 other cats, but as he grew up, he became less mobile, so he spent most of the time in the backyard of his home. Leonel says that Bobi is a “very sociable” dog. According to Leonel, not only did the calm and peaceful environment that he lived in contribute to Bobi’s long life, but also because of his diet. Costa says that Bobi always ate what they ate. Another thing that Leonel says is that they never kept Bobi on a leash and always let him run free.

Bobi was found in a stack of wood and was instantly adopted by Leonel and his brother’s. Bobi’s mother lived 18 long years, and another of Costa’s dogs, Chicote, made it to 22. Costa says, “We see situations like this as a normal result of the life that they have,” when talking about Bobi’s death, she also says that, “Bobi is one of a kind.”

The first time Guinness found out about Bobi, they were stunned. One reason was because he lived twice the amount of years his breed usually lives to, but another being he broke the record of being the oldest dog to ever live. This is very surprising because this record has not been broken in about a century. After finding out about Bobi’s death, officials at Guinness said that they were, “Saddened to learn about the death of Bobi, the oldest dog ever.”
