Hurricanes are tropical storms with very high winds. They can cause heavy rains, high winds, storm surges, and tornadoes. The damage caused by a hurricane depends on its strength and where it makes landfall. Hurricanes can create extreme damage to buildings and people,it is important to learn about hurricanes and how to protect oneself.
First, a person should research the location the hurricane is planned to go to. This is very important because they can now know how much time they have to prepare. According to CDC.gov, everyone should make an emergency plan including shelters, phone numbers, a safety kit, extra supplies, and a route for evacuation. Even though this is the best way to prepare, the hurricane’s direction is hard to predict so it is important to always have a source of live information. To protect a home: board up windows, fill baths with water, cut trees to prevent damage from winds, stack sandbags, and buy a generator in case there is a power outage. Once the hurricane hits a person’s area, they should already have a safe and secure shelter. One of the biggest ways to make sure a person is safe is to find a small closed area with no windows, such as a closet or a hallway that is ground level.
One of the most important things is to not go outside even if someone thinks it’s safe. A lot of people think that a hurricane is over, but they are just in the eye of a hurricane, making it appear to be calm, however, the other half is still coming. People should only leave their shelters once officials declare it is safe.
After a hurricane there are still very important safety precautions.
First, is to not go into floodwater, it is very dangerous due to debris that people can get injured from. Expect roads and transportation to be closed from damage. Someone should have a plan in case they will have to evacuate while repairs are being made to their town or home.
