Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, to Anne and Peter Rowling in Yate, England, and grew up in England and Wales. She was 6 years old when she wrote her first book called Rabbit, which was about a rabbit with measles. She attended Wyedean Comprehensive School and later got her bachelor’s in French at Exeter University.
After her bachelor’s degree, she started working as a secretary for many firms, including a publishing office where she had to write many rejection letters to authors. In the early 1990s, she moved to Portugal and taught English as a foreign language at the University of Porto. She married a television journalist named Jorge Arantes and had a daughter named Jessica, but got divorced and ended up moving to Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rowling fell asleep and had a dream about a little boy going to wizarding school. The idea for the Harry Potter series came to her fully formed, meaning she had the idea for all 7 books inspired by this dream. The first book of the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, also known as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was rejected 12 times before being published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books. It was released under the name J.K. Rowling to stop male readers from judging the book due to its author being a woman. J.K. Rowling stands for Joanne, her first name, Kathleen, her grandmother’s name, and Rowling, her last name. Soon after the release of the 4th Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, movie adaptations of the books started filming in the year 2000.
