Soccer is an amusing sport to watch and/or compete in. Soccer has many important roles and positions. There are 4 main positions that are vital to the team and the game itself…
- Goalkeeper
The goalkeeper is the most important role in soccer. This is due to the goalkeeper being in charge of keeping the ball from passing/crossing the endline into the goal. The goalkeeper keeps the ball from going into the net and prevents the opponent from scoring a point. The goalkeeper will be able to kick, and catch the ball from being kicked into the goal. Players are only allowed to use their hands when they are in the penalty area. Something that players are not allowed to do is to not pick up a pass directly from other teammates.
2. Forward.
A forwards role is to score on the other team’s defense. A forward is the front line of attack, making this position the main offensive player. When the ball is between the forward, goal, or goal line, players must run towards the ball. The forward must run all the way towards the opposite team’s goal or goalkeeper. The forward must follow all of the shots, meaning that players always have to follow the ball all the way to the front line.
3. Midfielder
The role of becoming a midfielder is very important and hard to achieve. These players take control and are in charge of having the game flow and tempo. A midfielder is positioned at the middle of the field, in between the defense line and the attackers, with the strongest players in the center. A midfielder is supposed to carry the ball up the field to create a better chance for not just them, but for the forwards to score.
4. Defender
The defender’s role is an important role in soccer. Center-backs, the defenders on the team, are the backbone of the game. Defenders have to make sure that the opposing team is not able to achieve a goal. They block and distract the opposing forwards from scoring a point. Center-Backs try to distract and overwhelm the opposing forwards and to give them a lower chance of making a goal.
These are just some of the many other important roles that are included in soccer. These tasks and roles are assigned to certain people, based on their abilities, skills, and their adaptation to the role. Without these roles, soccer would be not only confusing, but unorganized and disorderly, making the game reliant on these positions.
