Did people know that before candy canes were invented? – The whole idea of making the tasty sugar stick was brought up just to keep kids quiet during a performance? A choir master in Germany had given children these sugar sticks to be calm while his students performed, and it worked! In fact the choir master made the cane the shape of a staff just to resemble the shepherd’s staff, which was very holy to the choirmaster and his students. But, little did this Choirmaster know that the idea of the candy cane would stretch from 1670 to 2024 and be a world wide figure known by people all over the world.
But, the candy cane in the 1700’s looked a little different than how somebody would picture it today, because it was all white and had no stripes. This sugar stick then became a very popular decoration to hang on peoples christmas trees. This happened because it was a Christmas tradition for Germans to hang up candy, cookies, and other treats on the trees, which made the candy cane a perfect candidate. It wasn’t until the 1900’s that the sugar stick had gotten its red stripes that symbolize the trinity. But apart from its looks, in 1919 the first candy cane had been manufactured by bobs candies, and found in stores. But then there became a problem, candy canes became too easy to break and very fragile. It was almost impossible to take one out of the wrapper without breaking the cane. At last, in 1957, A Roman Catholic priest named Gregory H. Keller, then invented a machine that would make a candy cane better. This machine made candy canes sturdier, reducing breakage, and made them cheaper and easier to produce. This resulted in a major popularity with these canes. This machine was then named the Keller Machine. After this feat, over 1.2 billion of these treats were sold that year.
Overall, the Candy Cane has been a big part of many lives, because of all the joy and memories it brings to people, looking back at the hot chocolate, christmas decorations, and just seeing how many licks it takes to get through a candy cane.
