Kit-Kat originated from England and was made in 1935 by the company Rowntree’s which was owned by Henry Isaac Rowntree. Back then, the chocolate was named Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp. The idea of Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp began when one of the employers that worked for the company thought it would be a good idea to make a bar that could be taken on the go without creating a mess, which led to the creation of Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp. Back then, the chocolate bar had five sticks to break off, but now they only have four sticks, so the company would save about 20 percent of the profit made from the Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp.
In 1937, The chocolate bar was converted to the name everyone knows now, the Kit-Kat bar. It is believed that the name Rowntree’s converted to the name Kit-Kat because Rowntrees wanted to name it after the man, Cristopher Catling, who created the Kit-Kat club, after him.
Back then, Kit- Kat’s iconic colors were red and gold, however, in 1942, the color of the bar was briefly changed to blue to represent the shortages of fresh milk. The color of the bar was then changed back to the colors red and gold in 1949 due to the changes people made to restore the importance of fresh milk.
Kit-Kat’s popularity then drastically increased in 1950 with countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia and Canada all started to enjoy the amazing flavors of the Kit-Kat, making the company decide to create a commercial with the slogan “Have a break, have a Kit-Kat,” made by Donald Gillies from an advertising agency in London. This commercial made Kit-Kat a very well known chocolate. Then, in 1987, another very famous commercial came out with dancing pandas which has the jingle, “Have a break, have a Kit-Kat”.
Throughout the years, 1999-2007, the brand created two new forms of the chocolate which were, the Kit-Kat chunky and the Kit- Kat ice-cream. Amazingly, the chocolate bar travels to space thanks to the Nestle team in 2012. Lastly, through the years 2013-2021, six new forms of Kit-Kat have been created with over 5 billion bars have been sold.
Overall, Kit-Kat has had a huge impact on many lives and has brought joy and happiness to others. Especially in many people’s hectic or overwhelming lives, all that is needed to be done, is to have a break, have a Kit-Kat.
