What is Hazbin Hotel About?

Hazbin Hotel is a cartoon series which you can find on Youtube and Prime Video. The series follows the protagonist, Charlie Morningstar, as she persists to fulfill her dream of opening a hotel called “Hazbin Hotel ” which aims to rehabilitate sinners of hell to earn a second chance into Heaven. Charlie is the daughter of Lucifer, the King of Hell, which makes Charlie the Princess of Hell. Charlie wants to open up an opportunity for redemption for sinners because the angels of heaven carry out an annual extermination where they come down to Hell and kill a handful of demons. This is so they could prevent Hell’s population from uprising. Charlie isn’t seen doing this alone as she’s followed by other characters in the show helping her establish the hotel. These characters include Alastor (also known as the Radio Demon), Vaggie (Charlie’s girlfriend), Niffty (the Hotel’s maid), Husk (the Hotel’s bartender), Sir Pencious (a snake-like demon), and Angel Dust(a spider-like demon).

Hazbin Hotels History

Hazbin Hotel is created and directed by american animator Viviane Medrano. Medrano has created and animated many projects, not just Hazbin Hotel. She’s also known for creating “Helluva Boss”, another series on youtube which also takes place in Hell in the same universe as Hazbin. Growing up, Medrano grew interested in animated series and drawing. Even the characters of Hazbin Hotel were inspired by some of her sketches she drew during middle school. Hazbin Hotel is also a musical show. Many songs in Hazbin Hotel, and other projects in the Helluverse, were  written by Sam Haft, who is half of a band called The Living Tombstone. The official album containing the songs is also available on Spotify for listening to. Medrano shared her inspiration on social media from other cartoons such as South Park, another adult cartoon where Medrano got her adult humor inspiration off of.

Skyrocketing Popularity

Ever since the release of the first episode on January 18th, 2024, Hazbin Hotel has experienced a skyrocket in views on Prime Video, with the pilot episode, released in 2019, reaching over 101 million views on Youtube. Since then, it’s become a major topic on social media, and a part of a lot of conversations among students here at Rio Norte. 8th grader Maanvi Rudraprakash, one of many Hazbin Hotel fans, had quite a bit to say about this new series. “What I mostly like about Hazbin Hotel is the animation styles and personalities of the characters.” Digging deeper into the characters, Maanvi adds, “My favorite episode of season 1 is ‘Masquerade ‘ (episode 4) because it has a lot of character development in general (especially for Angel Dust).” Furthermore, Maanvi shares that her favorite character is Husk, who plays a role as the hotel’s bartender. Maanvi goes on to say, “I admire his personality and I find it relatable in a way because of his sense of humor and just overall mood. I also like Husk’s character design.”

Because of the pilot’s record-breaking amount of views, it earned a spot for streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video. The company has even made an announcement explaining how the series gained countless views for a new animated title for the platform.

Summary of Season 1

Hazbin Hotel has already completed a full season that includes eight episodes. With Charlie establishing the hotel and trying to communicate with the angels of heaven about her plan of giving sinners a second chance to redeem themselves into heaven via in person meetings. However, we see that both the sinners of Hell and the angels of Heaven mock Charlie’s plan for redemption. She doesn’t let that stand her way and at the end of the season, we see a final battle between the angels and the characters contributing to the hotel. 8th grader Edyth Fritschle says that, “I love the story and all the characters. My favorite episodes are either 5 (“Dad Beat Dad”), episode 6 (“Welcome to Heaven”), or episode 8 (“The Show Must Go on”).” Edyth goes on to explain why she favors these episodes the most, stating that, “What I like most about episode 5 was how we were first introduced to Lucifer. In episode 6, we are introduced to what heaven looks like and it has my favorite song in it, that being ‘You Didn’t Know’. Lastly, episode 8 because it’s the season finale.” Digging deeper, Edyth shares her favorite character in Hazbin Hotel. “My favorite character is Angel Dust because he’s got such a cool design, backstory, and voice. I like how he cares for others too.” The director Vinnie Medrano has confirmed a release of season 2 for Hazbin Hotel, so this would be exciting news for fans.
