Imagine a world where robots run the entire world. Everyone’s jobs are taken away from them and Artificial Intelligence poses a big threat to the human race. This might be the first thought that comes to mind when the topic of Artificial Intelligence is brought up. However, Artificial Intelligence is more than robots destined to take over the world. Artificial Intelligence has an interesting background, could possibly have a fascinating future, and its already proven beneficial to us today.
When it comes to the history of Artificial Intelligence, it can be really extensive. The Concept of Artificial Intelligence started off around the year 1930 with films like the “Wizard of Oz” and “Metropolis” where the movies depict robots built to be like humans. At the time Artificial Intelligence seemed impossible but by 1950 many scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers were thinking about the possibilities of the concept of Artificial Intelligence. One mathematician, Alan Turing was a young british man who explored the possibility of Artificial Intelligence through a paper he wrote called “Computing Machinery and Intelligence”. He wrote about his view on Artificial Intelligence but he couldn’t possibly start to build a machine capable of Artificial Intelligence due to the computers being less sophisticated than we have today. Five years later a conference was held called the “Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence” which was hosted by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky in 1956. In this conference, top researchers from every field were invited for an open-ended discussion on Artificial Intelligence. Sadly the conference didn’t go as planned as many went and left as they pleased but even with this everyone agreed that Artificial Intelligence was achievable. From this discussion, the effort kickstarted the next twenty years of study towards Artificial Intelligence.
In the future, there are many industries that can benefit from Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is expected to be in the military to perform numerous tasks like being a soldier which is the safest way to increase national security because an Artificial Intelligence soldier doesn’t require a human. Artificial Intelligence is anticipated to help lives in more ways than one due to Artificial Intelligence most likely becoming a tool for doctors and physicians. Artificial Intelligence could help with diagnostic work through this more diagnostics are anticipated to be more accurate. Artificial Intelligence would likely be used in other professions, like law because by 2028 the number of lawyers are expected to be cut by 25% or more because Artificial Intelligence can do the work of 10 -20 lawyers in a more cost effective and efficient way.
Even though Artificial Intelligence can bring many challenges to the world, there are benefits to Artificial Intelligence. Unlike people, Artificial Intelligence can produce and perform work faster than humans in general also while being more accurate. This effort could lead to less human errors and inconveniences. Artificial Intelligence can also prove helpful towards students if they use it right. If a student struggles with a certain topic they learned in school they can turn to Artificial Intelligence to personally tutor them and because it is readily available the students can be tutored on their own time and get credible information. When questioning Ms. Ng, a english teacher at Rio Norte, about the benefits of Artificial Intelligence she responded with “ AI can benefit me when teaching because I used it to show students that the essays it generates sound good but would actually earn somewhere around a D”.
Artificial Intelligence can drastically change how the world works. Artificial Intelligence can also revolutionize the world for the better. However, Artificial Intelligence can bring along some unexpected circumstances. The world has to learn through experience and how to best use and the true benefits of Artificial Intelligence.
