Hurricane Hilary came as a surprise to residents of California because the last tropical storm to hit California was in the 1900’s. The tropical storm brought many inches of rain to Santa Clarita. According to SCV(Santa Clarita Valley) Signal the storm dropped 4+ inches of rain on SCV. SCV Signal also says the rain eroded portions of Sand Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Road. According to one CBS article,”As Hilary was raking across Southern California on Sunday, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck near Ojai, northwest of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.”
The tropical storm caused many schools including Rio Norte to close because of flooding. This gave tons of students a Monday off since it was considered an emergency. This tropical storm also flooded many parts of Santa Clarita. A flash flood warning was also issued for Santa Clarita. SCV Signal says,”Two lanes going westbound on Soledad Canyon Road, between Camp Plenty Road and Languid Avenue were also closed due to a leaning light pole.”
For one person Hurricane Hilary was a great time for his hobby. For Mr.O this was a great opportunity to go surfing, he says ”The waves had a better swell.” To put an end to his fun the rain started according to Mr. O “ When it started to rain the waves got washed out, so I went home.”
Hurricane Hilary was a rare phenomenon to happen in California since it is on the west coast. The last tropical storm to hit California was around 84 years ago, and we will probably not get another tropical storm for a long time. Overall SCV did not take any major damage from the storm, just a handful of minor things. The biggest effect of the hurricane on SCV was probably all the flooding. Now next time a tropical storm hits SCV we will know what to expect.
