Extra credit is an opportunity that students should take advantage of whenever possible. Not only does it give students a chance to improve their grades, but it also allows them to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter in a way that goes beyond the standard curriculum.

Extra credit can be especially beneficial for students who may be struggling in a particular class. It gives them a chance to make up for missed assignments or to improve their grades in areas where they may not have performed as well as they would have liked. Extra credit assignments can take many different forms from additional reading and research to creative projects and presentations. These assignments allow students to explore topics that interest them and to develop their skills in areas they may not have had the opportunity to do so in the regular coursework.

7th-grade science teacher, Mrs. Zide was asked what her opinion was on giving students extra credit. Her response was, “I think a small amount of extra credit might be helpful for some students, and when I offer it I try to make it like an enrichment activity for students to kind of go a little deeper or learn about something we didn’t have time to cover in class.”

Overall, extra credit is a valuable tool that students should use whenever possible. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, explore topics that interest them, and improve their grades in areas where they maybe are struggling.
