Space is something that has remained a mystery for centuries on earth, starting from greek philosophers to modern-day scientists nobody really knows how space exists. So people have been wondering, what is space?

A very simple way to define space is “the zone above our planet that has no gravity or air to breathe or scatter light”. The difference between space and the universe is: space is the boundless void between two objects, while the universe is the physical existence of everything in that space. In space, everything has a mass, and that mass is what defines how dense that object is; while a planet may be relatively heavy, a black hole has millions of times more energy than a planet and is far denser.

A black hole is a phenomenon that happens in space where a large star collapses because of the high amounts of pressure that a star is used to drop, gravity takes over and the star collapses. Stars collapse because of a lack of hydrogen, hydrogen is needed to make helium, and helium is needed because of the intense heat that it produces. When the star collapses, a supernova is created and one of two things can happen: a neutron star or a black hole. A neutron star occurs when the star that collapsed isn’t massive enough to create a black hole.

When asked what he thinks space is, science teacher St. Peter said, “Space is above Earth’s atmosphere, past the Kármán Line, devoid of breathable air. Space separates Earth from other celestial planets. Objects in space have a gravitational pull on each other, the more massive the object the stronger the gravitational force. Objects that are not within a gravitational zone can drift forever until an unbalanced force acts upon them, such as another object or a planet’s gravitational force forces it within its atmosphere, like a meteorite. The darkness of space is often explained as dark matter, which is considered the majority of the mass in the universe.”

In conclusion, space is infinite and will not cease to exist, unlike the universe. It is also diverse in repeating cycles and patterns. Filled with supernatural phenomena, space has been a thrill for top scholars to study.
