One of the best things in movies is recognizing a place or location in the set. Though it is immersion breaking, it’s cool to know that a place you call home is famous. Even though this isn’t common in most towns, here in Santa Clarita we are home to lots of iconic films and TV shows. We are even sometimes considered the backlot of Hollywood.

To begin, we quite literally have a popular show named after us, “The Santa Clarita Diet”. This show is a horror comedy about a married realtor couple that takes a dark turn when the wife dies and she awakes with a taste for human flesh. And yes, this show does canonically take place in Santa Clarita and was filmed in our own area code (91354). Shows currently being  filmed here include, Good Trouble, Mayans MC, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, NCIS, and S.W.A.T. Other shows include 10 Things I Hate About You (ABC Family), A Wrinkle in Time, CSI (CBS), CSI: Vegas, Make It or Break It (ABC Family), Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Fox), MythBusters (Science Channel), Star Trek: Picard (CBS All Access), Switched at Birth (ABC Family/Freeform) Ultimate Beastmaster (Netflix), Zoey 101, Euphoria, Wandavision, and many, many more.

Though there are an overwhelming number of famous shows filmed partially in Santa Clarita, along with many movies that also had parts filmed here too. This includes Titanic, A Star is Born, A Quiet Place, Space Jam: A New Legacy, A Wrinkle in Time, Bird Box, The Conjuring 2, The Flintstones, The Haunted Mansion, Iron Man (1, 2, and 3), Jackass 3D, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Spongebob Sponge on the Run, Yes Day, and much more.

Even though this is already a lot, countless other productions such as commercials, music videos, and web productions have been filmed out here too. Artists who filmed music videos out here include Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Dua Lipa, Foo Fighters, Jojo Siwa (twice), Katy Perry (four times), Lady Gaga, Machine Gun Kelly (twice), Post Malone (three times), Rihana, and many more artists.

The reason a lot of media is filmed here is because of our barren and wild-west like landscape. Places like Vasquez Rocks make an iconic spot for filming territories that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. COC or College of the Canyons is also frequently filmed at. Most importantly, fall in the “30 Mile Zone” in which studios get free travel and don’t have to pay mileage, making us a hot stop for filming on a budget.

To conclude, our helpful proximity to great filming places make us home to many scenes in iconic films, and it’s lovely to see our very own town and our own people in these blockbuster films.  So next time you’re rewiring an old favorite to bring your new favorite show, keep an eye out for places in SCV. As Issabelll Bet says, “I was really surprised to see how many shows and movies I’ve seen that were filmed where I live!”
