If someone was to ask you what the most iconic female cartoon character is, you would most likely say Minnie Mouse, and her iconic red dress and bow. Though her red dress and bow is the most well known, being a self proclaimed fashionista, she has undergone many outfit changes throughout the  100 years of her being Disney’s favorite female mascot. But, none has caused such uproar as the most recent: The Pants Suit.

March 6th 2022 will mark the 30th year anniversary of Disneyland France, and Disney hired Stella McCartney to make an outfit for the occasion. Stella McCartney owns a luxury brand of clothing in England, and is a photographer and civil rights activist. She is also the adopted daughter of Paul McCartney, a singer songwriter who was a part of the Beatles. Her design was a navy pants suit with black polka dots, and as Ms. McCartney stated, “This new take on her signature polka dots makes Minnie Mouse a symbol of progress for a new generation.” Many people were upset about this, and were infuriated that they would change her iconic look for a pant suit. But, the rage was almost senseless. Minnie Mouse has gone through many outfit changes, equally changing up all aspects of her design. Minnie’s design for the Disney Cruise liner was wearing pants, and also featured no polka dots. She also has many dresses changing her color scheme and designs, like her Topolino design. But both of those had no backlash.

To many though, the change was bad for a different reason. Many did not have a positive outlook on the outfit design. To many, the outfit looks more like a pajama suit than formal wear wear. Many like the idea of a new take on the iconic polka dots but it is simply plain and not executed well.  As Natalie Carrey stated, “It’s not that big of a deal but it’s not the best design.” Many have attempted to redesign this, but as of now, there are no plans to change the design for the big day.
