Makayla Velasquez is a basketball loving 8th grade Riverhawk. She has played on both co-ed and all girls basketball teams. She is going to go to high school at Chaminade College Preparatory. Makayla was asked to play on that basketball team. In the future she wants to go to a basketball college. Although she is not on a team currently due to the pandemic, she still practices for later in the year when she’ll get the opportunity to play regularly.

Q: How long have you been playing basketball?

A: I have been playing basketball since I was 6 but I really started to get into it when I was 10.

Q: Have you decided what colleges you’re going to try to get into?

A: I want to go to either UCLA or Baylor because those are 2 of the top schools for women’s basketball

Q: Do you want to play basketball as a career? Or as a hobby?

A.I think of it as an opportunity to get a good education after high school and set me up for life even if I think of it as a hobby.

Q: Why do you like basketball?

A:I like basketball because it is competitive and fast paced and overall fun when you are playing with friends.

Q: What role do you play in the game?

A: I either play small-forward or point-guard it really depends where the team needs me

Q: What made you want to play?

A:For the first four years of me playing my dad forced me to, but when I turned 10 something just clicked and made me want to play. So I started practicing and I eventually became good and was playing with both boys and girls for the full time I was playing, but the summer before middle school I joined an all-girls basket-ball league. I scored at least 10 points a game and my highest point-scoring game was 27 points and that season made me love basketball.
